Nanzen-ji

Nanzen-ji

南禅寺

Set on the site of Emperor Kameyama’s former detached palace, Nanzen-ji is a serene Rinzai Zen temple founded in 1291 and still the headquarters of its branch. Wander the nationally designated historic precincts, linger in the Hōjō gardens — a recognized Place of Scenic Beauty — and soak up the tranquil, time‑worn atmosphere of buildings rebuilt after the 1895 fire.
