Meet at Shinagawa Station

Overview

Shinagawa Station is one of Tokyo's most strategically located transportation hubs. JR East's FY2024 average daily boardings were 287,939. As a stop on the Tokaido Shinkansen and with a direct 11-minute connection to Haneda Airport via the Keikyu Line, it works especially well for groups that include both bullet train travelers and air arrivals.

The station splits into the Takanawa Exit (west) and the Konan Exit (east). The Takanawa side faces the Shinagawa Prince Hotel and quieter residential streets, while the Konan side opens onto a modern office district with pedestrian decks and waterfront developments. A massive redevelopment between Shinagawa and the neighboring Takanawa Gateway Station is transforming the area into one of Tokyo's newest urban districts.

When your group includes someone arriving from Osaka by Shinkansen and another from Haneda Airport, Shinagawa is the most efficient meeting point in Tokyo.

Tips for Meeting Here

  • For Shinkansen arrivals, specify "Central Gate": Shinagawa's Shinkansen gates have north and south exits. The Central Gate is the clearest point to meet someone transferring to local lines.
  • Direct Haneda arrivals to Keikyu: The Keikyu Shinagawa platforms are adjacent to JR. After exiting the Keikyu gates, a right turn leads directly to the JR concourse — the whole transfer takes under 5 minutes.
  • Avoid Konan Exit mornings: The office district side gets very congested between 8-9 AM on weekdays. Use the Takanawa Exit instead.
  • Future Chuo Shinkansen (maglev): Shinagawa is planned as the Tokyo terminus for the future maglev route, which will further strengthen its role as a regional hub.

FAQ

Q: How do I meet a friend arriving from Haneda Airport?

A: They should take the Keikyu Airport Express to Shinagawa (11 minutes). After exiting the Keikyu gates, turn right to reach the JR Central Gate concourse. You can expect to meet within 5 minutes of their train arriving.

Q: My friend is coming from Osaka by Shinkansen. Where should I wait?

A: Wait at the JR Central Gate area. It takes about 5 minutes to walk from the Shinkansen platform to this point. Set your meeting time 10 minutes after the Shinkansen's scheduled arrival.

Q: Are there banquet-size venues near Shinagawa?

A: Yes. Shinagawa Intercity and Atre Shinagawa both have restaurants with private rooms and semi-private spaces. For parties over 20, the Shinagawa Prince Hotel has dedicated banquet halls.

Q: How many coin lockers does Shinagawa Station have?

A: Roughly 700 lockers are available, concentrated near the Shinkansen gates and Central Gate. Large suitcase sizes are limited, so store luggage in the morning if possible.
