金閣寺

龍安寺

Tucked into northwest Kyoto, Ryoan-ji is a Zen temple famed for its kare-sansui rock garden—15 carefully placed stones set in a sea of raked white pebbles. Pause, sit, or simply gaze; the spare, meditative composition draws you into quiet reflection and has earned the site UNESCO World Heritage recognition.

大徳寺

Daitoku-ji is a sprawling Rinzai Zen complex in northern Kyoto where quiet moss gardens, intimate tea houses and over 20 sub-temples offer a concentrated taste of Japanese culture. Explore serene courtyards and historic screen paintings and tea utensils, but note that the main hall is closed to the public and many sub-temples only open at limited times — check schedules before you go.

仁和寺

Ninna-ji, the head temple of the Omuro school of Shingon Buddhism in western Kyoto, was founded in AD 888 by Emperor Uda and rebuilt in the 17th century. As part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (UNESCO), it invites visitors to wander its historic halls and tranquil grounds, experiencing imperial connections and traditional Buddhist architecture up close.

上賀茂神社

清水寺
