Meet at Omiya Station

Meet at Omiya Station

Overview

Omiya is the largest terminal station in Saitama Prefecture. JR East's FY2024 average daily boardings were 254,220. JR lines, the Tobu Urban Park Line, the New Shuttle, and the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen all stop here, making Omiya a practical midpoint for groups gathering from Tokyo, Saitama, Gunma, Tochigi, and even Niigata or Nagano.

The east exit area has earned a reputation as one of the best drinking districts outside central Tokyo. Narrow streets packed with yakitori joints, seafood izakaya, and local bars create a lively after-work and weekend scene. Whether you are grabbing dinner after an event at Sonic City or meeting friends halfway, Omiya delivers on food, drink, and convenience.

Best Meetup Spots at the Station

1. East Exit "Mame no Ki" Monument

The "Mame no Ki" (bean tree) sculpture immediately outside the East Exit is Omiya's most iconic meeting point. Every local knows it, making it virtually impossible to miss.

2. West Exit Deck (Toward Sonic City)

The pedestrian deck on the west side connects directly to Sonic City. Wide and open, it offers great visibility — ideal for gathering before a concert or conference.

3. Ecute Omiya (Inside Gates)

Inside the JR ticket gates, Ecute Omiya is convenient for groups arriving by train. The sweets and souvenir shops mean you can pick up a gift while you wait.

4. Lumine Omiya 1F Entrance

The ground-floor entrance of Lumine on the east side has a covered area and is easy to describe to first-time visitors. Cafes inside Lumine make for a comfortable fallback.

East Exit Suzuran-dori

Omiya's signature drinking street. Yakitori, motsu-ni (stewed offal), and seafood izakaya line both sides of the road. The crowd is a mix of salarymen and students, and the atmosphere is unpretentious. Budget: 2,000-3,500 yen per person.

East Exit Minami-Ginza Area

South of Suzuran-dori lies a deeper, more eclectic drinking zone. Small owner-run bars and izakaya are packed tightly together — perfect for a bar-hopping evening. Budget: 2,000-4,000 yen per person.

Sonic City Vicinity (West Exit)

Around Sonic City you will find hotel-affiliated restaurants and dining bars. Convenient for post-event dinners with a slightly more upscale feel. Budget: 3,000-5,000 yen per person.

Omiya Kadocho (East Exit)

Opened in 2022, this mixed-use complex houses a restaurant floor with Japanese, Italian, and Chinese options under one roof. Budget: 2,500-5,000 yen per person.

Omiya Raccoon (East Exit)

This commercial building right at the East Exit contains yakiniku chains, conveyor-belt sushi, and karaoke. A solid choice for after-dinner activities with a large group. Budget: 1,500-3,500 yen per person.

Lumine / Ecute Omiya (Station Dining)

For rainy days or quick bites, the station-connected restaurant floors cover everything from cafes to full sit-down meals. Budget: 1,000-3,000 yen per person.

Tips for Meeting Here

  • East Exit = izakaya district, West Exit = Sonic City — Share the correct exit with your group in advance. Walking between exits inside the station takes a few minutes.
  • Shinkansen passengers need transfer time — The Shinkansen gates and local JR gates are some distance apart. Allow extra minutes if someone is arriving by bullet train.
  • Friday nights are packed on the east side — Popular izakaya fill up fast on Fridays and the eve of holidays. The organizer should book ahead.
  • Hikawa Shrine is a 15-minute walk — If you plan to visit, walk there and take a Tobu bus back to save energy for the evening.

FAQ

Q: Are there coin lockers at Omiya Station?

A: Yes. Lockers are located near Ecute inside the gates and at both the East and West exits. Because Omiya is a Shinkansen stop, larger lockers for suitcases are well-stocked.

Q: Is it easy to walk between the East and West exits?

A: Inside the ticket gates the transfer is quick. Outside the gates, you need to use the underground passage, which takes about 5-7 minutes. Best to agree on an exit beforehand.

Q: Are there late-night bars in Omiya?

A: Many izakaya and bars along Suzuran-dori and in the Minami-Ginza area stay open until 1-2 AM. If you miss the last train, capsule hotels and internet cafes near the station can bail you out.

Q: Do I need a reservation for the Railway Museum?

A: Reservations are not mandatory, but advance purchase through the official website or convenience stores is recommended. Same-day tickets are sold from 10:00 at the museum ticket machines, though busy dates can sell out early.
