Tucked in the far north of Kyoto, Kurama-dera is a quietly powerful temple that houses several National Treasures and centers on a singular, esoteric object of worship found nowhere else. Visitors come to experience its rare spiritual atmosphere and to feel a living slice of Japan’s religious history—said to have been founded by a disciple of the Chinese monk Ganjin and long tied to the Tendai tradition.
