Overview

Mount Takao (高尾山, Takaosan) stands 599 meters tall in western Tokyo, just 50 minutes from Shinjuku by train. Part of the Meiji no Mori Takao Quasi-National Park, it is one of Japan's busiest and most accessible hiking mountains.

Despite the crowds, Takao offers genuinely beautiful nature: dense cedar forests, seasonal wildflowers, autumn leaves, and on clear winter days, a stunning view of Mount Fuji from the summit.

Best for: First-time hikers, families with kids, anyone wanting an easy day trip from Tokyo.

Mount Takao

A green oasis just 50 minutes from Shinjuku. Perfect for beginners with well-marked trails, a cable car, and mountaintop temple.

Getting There

The trailhead is at Takaosanguchi Station (高尾山口駅) on the Keio Line.

FromRouteTimeCost
ShinjukuKeio Line (express)~50 min¥390
Tokyo StationJR Chuo Line → Keio Line~70 min¥580
YokohamaJR Yokohama Line → Keio Line~90 min¥720

The Keio Mt. Takao Discount Ticket (高尾山きっぷ) bundles round-trip rail travel with the cable car or chairlift at a discounted combined price. Check the current offer at Keio ticket machines or on the official Keio website before travel.

Hiking Routes

Mount Takao has 6 numbered trails plus the Inariyama Ridge Trail. Here are the most popular:

Trail 1 (Omotesando) — The Classic

  • Distance: 3.8 km one way
  • Time: ~90 min up, ~70 min down
  • Difficulty: Easy (paved the entire way)
  • Highlights: Yakuoin Temple, monkey park, panoramic views

This is the most popular route and the easiest. The first half can be skipped with the cable car or chairlift.

Trail 4 — Suspension Bridge Route

  • Distance: 1.5 km (merges with Trail 1)
  • Time: ~40 min
  • Difficulty: Easy–Moderate
  • Highlights: A small suspension bridge over the forest canopy

Trail 6 — Biwa Waterfall Route

  • Distance: 3.3 km
  • Time: ~100 min up
  • Difficulty: Moderate (unpaved, some rocky sections)
  • Highlights: Stream-side walking, Biwa Waterfall, forest immersion

Trail 6 can be slippery after rain. Wear proper shoes — not sandals or smooth-soled sneakers.

Inariyama Ridge Trail

  • Distance: 3.1 km
  • Time: ~90 min up
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Highlights: Ridge-top views, quieter than numbered trails

What to See

Yakuoin Temple (薬王院)

A 1,200-year-old Buddhist temple near the summit. The atmospheric approach lined with cedar trees and tengu (long-nosed goblin) statues is the highlight of Trail 1.

Cable Car & Chairlift

The cable car (ケーブルカー) takes 6 minutes and climbs to the midpoint station at 472m. The open-air chairlift (リフト) takes 12 minutes and offers better views. Both currently cost ¥490 one way / ¥980 round trip.

OptionTimeOne WayRound Trip
Cable Car6 min¥490¥980
Chairlift12 min¥490¥980

Summit Views

On clear days (especially autumn and winter mornings), you can see Mount Fuji from the summit observation deck. The probability is highest from November to February.

Food & Soba

Takao is famous for tororo soba — buckwheat noodles topped with grated mountain yam. Several soba restaurants line Trail 1 and cluster around the cable car stations.

Popular spots include Takahashiya (高橋家) at the base and Momijiya near the summit.

The seasonal beer garden near the cable car upper station usually operates during the warmer months, but dates and opening hours change each year. Check the official Takao Tozan site before you go.

Tips for Beginners

  • When to go: Spring (cherry blossoms) and autumn (fall colors, late Nov) are the most scenic. Winter mornings offer the clearest Fuji views. Avoid weekends and holidays if you dislike crowds.
  • What to bring: Water, a light snack, sunscreen, and a towel. The trails have vending machines and restrooms.
  • What to wear: Trail 1 is fully paved, so any comfortable walking shoes work. For Trail 6 or Inariyama, wear hiking shoes with grip.
  • Time needed: 3-4 hours round trip via Trail 1 (with temple visit). Add 1-2 hours if you skip the cable car.

Where to Stay

If you want to combine Mount Takao with a full day in the Hachioji / western Tokyo area, staying nearby is a great option.
